KDE between the past and present
Hello there everyone.
I wanted to share with you in this blog my thoughts about what i felt when i tried out the new KDE plasma 5.18 and how it compared with earlier versions of KDE.
I remember it used to fall behind in terms of looks and appearance when it was compared to something like Gnome 2.x , Gnome back in the day was the king of looks because of how customizable it was with GTK 2.x and compiz ( remember those crazy effects ? ) and also it wasn't as fast or efficient as gnome and it had LOADS of bugs , specially after the 4.0 release.
Everyone was waiting for the KDE 4 release, there were rumors and screenshots of a very beautiful KDE version about to get released but after it got released, it was so bad in terms of usability and even didn't look as good as the 3.5 version and it had very minimal features and still heavy on the RAM, i guess at that time everyone turned their backs to KDE and started using an alternative like gnome or XFCE at that time.
After the KDE 4.0 disaster, things kept getting worse and worse and KDE was noted at this time as the buggy desktop environment that consumed your time( because of crashing all the time) and RAM , maybe after KDE 4.3 things started to loosen up for KDE as it was the first "really" stable release and the one that i felt comfortable using.
Currently we have KDE Plasma, a modern fast efficient desktop environment as it ought to be.
These days KDE is no longer the buggy DE that everyone wanted to use but really couldn't.
KDE now is the renowned performance champ across most of the current DE's (specially Gnome which is currently known as a resource hog)
It's really great to see what KDE developer community have accomplished in earlier years, at some time i didn't think that KDE was going to return to its glory again as the workstation and usability champ.
We can definitely see that a lot of distributions are starting to adapt KDE as the main desktop environment and i can personally easily recommend it to everyone ( specially power users).

A bit of history
I have been enthusiastic about KDE since the days of KDE 3.5 and the very rough edges of it.![]() |
